Last week was a decent but not great week for the predictions, with a 72% success rate. The closest correct upset pick was basically a toss-up for Penn State-Iowa, with Iowa losing by one.

The updated predictions (http://football.loudsound.org/2009/predictive/complete/4/rank/16) have a Texas-Virginia Tech matchup in the National Championship, with Texas taking it all home.

This week's predictions (http://football.loudsound.org/2009/predictive/complete/4/scores/5) started off with a bang: West Virgina 34 - Colorado 23 (actual score, West Virginia 35 - Colorado 24!). Unfortunately we couldn't account for Southern Miss being without their top running back and #2 receiver, so couldn't predict their upset loss to UAB.

In some of the other big games this week we have Oklahoma over Miami, BC over FSU, Michigan wiping the floor with Michigan State, LSU taking care of Georgia, Mississippi State keeping it close against Georgia Tech, and in the toss-up game of the week, USC 25 - Cal 24! So just like Stewart Mandel thinks, this could go either way.

Not too bad of a first week! Although we were wrong about a few of the big games (picking Virginia Tech, Oklahoma and Georgia), we still went 62-17 during the first week for a 78.4% success rate! The rankings won't be very meaningful until at least Week 3 or 4, so we won't delve into those for awhile. Check back in a couple of days for analysis of this week's games! (or if you're in a hurry, go ahead and check out http://football.loudsound.org/2009/predictive/complete/pre/scores/2 to see what we're predicting.

Let's look at the first week's predictions! As mentioned before, the first week of predictions is basically a win/loss scenario, so we won't look at scores this time. For the big games of the weekend, we have Virginia Tech over Alabama, Oklahoma over BYU, Georgia edging Oklahoma State, Miami defeating FSU, and for the season opener, South Carolina over NC State. The closest thing to an upset is Boise State over Oregon, but that may not be much of a surprise.

So some of you may have noticed a couple of odd entries in the preseason predictions below. Namely the exclusion of USC and the inclusion of Connecticut. Let's briefly look at how this happened.

USC fell to 7-5 in the regular season due to their mid-season schedule. They had a stretch of California, Notre Dame and Oregon State which were all also undefeated or had one loss at mid-season. Due to the strength of their victories they were all able to narrowly edge USC in head-to-head competition.

UConn makes the Top 10 on the basis of their undefeated season. They were able to pick up a few easy wins early on, while most of their toughest competition stumbled, and when a team keeps on winning, it doesn't matter if they're UConn or not in my polls!

Now for a simple experiment...the first week's scores are pretty much a win or lose scenario, with the winner getting 17 points and the loser 14...from there everything changes based on strength of schedule. But since previous scores are taken into account, if USC defeats San Jose State by a score of 17-7 instead, all of a sudden they finish the regular season undefeated and ranked #4! Cal still manages to finish 11-1 and ranked #10.

Check back later this week for some of this week's key predictions!

Here they are, the preseason predictions for 2009! The following is based on the loudsound.org predictive formula that you can access above, including the last 3 seasons of results and the team's schedule.

Top 10 at the end of the regular season (week 16):

1. Texas
2. Florida
3. Virginia Tech
4. Michigan
5. Connecticut
6. Auburn
7. Kansas
8. California
9. Georgia
10. Oklahoma

And in the National Championship game we have Florida edging out Texas for their 2nd title in a row! However, in a strange twist, Texas had such a large Rating lead, that it still finishes ranked number 1! How's that for controversy?
